‘Bucket list’ teen loses cancer fight

Head to your favorite online news source. Pick an article with a headline that grabs you. Now, write a short story based on the article.

I spotted this in the Metro, and when I read the story, I became aware of what an amazing young woman Alice Payne was. Despite battling Hodgkins lymphoma for four years, this amazing 17 year old created and completed her bucket list, set up a charity called Alice’s escapes, and raised more than £100,000 for good causes.

alice payneHer charity gives parents money to take sick children on holiday.

Her last post to her blog on New Years day included her excitement at a static caravan being delivered for the charity. She wrote

I’ll try really hard not to pop off in the next few weeks and then I can be at the open day we’re planning!

Visit and have a read of her blog, she is one brave, inspirational and amazing young woman who has made a HUGE impact on the world in her short 17 year life. Not satisfied with just charity work, she also cmpaigned on national issues. In Spetember 2012 She was in the Guardian, campaigning against the changes to child benefits.

Her twitter profile motto ‘One life…. live it’ should be adopted by all of us.

The top item on her list was the hope that everyone in the UK signed up to be a bone marrow donor. I am, are you?

Alice, may you rest in peace.

It always seems to me that the young people taken by cancer are such amazing people but now I wonder if it is just knowing your life will be short is what pushing people to be so amazing. Other people who don’t have cancer (as of yet) tend to take their life for granted, thinking each day is promised. It isn’t though and we all need to live our lives like we could die tomorrow. Tomorrow is a gift we may never be able to open. Do what you can now and don’t wait thinking we have our whole lives ahead of us. Great post.
