I wish someone would invent autistic glasses

28 Feb

It gets on my nerves. People that should know better, people that supposedly make a profession out of teaching students with special educational needs yet these same people stand in judgement of students purely based on their behaviour alone.

eyeglassesI wish there was a device we could wear, like beer goggles, that enabled people to see the world from the point of view of a child on the autistic spectrum, even if only for a moment.

Why do so few people look past so many signs and make so many judgements?

I spent my day arguing the case for and defending the rights of one of my students today. I should never need to do that. Every child has the right to an education. Every child does not have the right for adults to assume things about them, and judge the book by its cover.

Autism is easy to understand. Behaviour is a communication, not words. Behaviour tells you if the world is ok or not. It is up to YOU to put it right for them, so they can access the education just like everyone else.

rant over.
