Do we really need all 26 letters?

4 Mar

Daily prompt: There are 26 letters in the English language, and we need every single one of them. Want proof? Choose a letter and write a blog post without using it.

type-alphabet_strikecover_11If you were a special needs student, you would say no. In fact, you could probably do without most of the letters. If you were autistic, you might say none were that important because that was not how you communicated anyway.

If you were from Bulgaria, you would be very confused, because all our letters are completely different to yours. In fact, in Bulgaria, 26 is not even enough. I know that because I used to teach a boy from Bulgaria, who was placed in a GCSE year 10 group, not being able to speak English, definitely not being able to write it. Try, at the age of 15 learning a new language from scratch, including the alphabet and how to form the letters. Not easy at all, specially when the rules for English are so tricky.

Think about this: how many ways can you say ‘ough’? how many different words can you think of that contain it. What would you say the pronunciation rule was, if you were teaching it to a foreigner?

You should think yourself lucky that you speak English, because by comparison to Spanish for instance, there are thousands more phonemes, making it one of the most difficult languages on the planet.

So it’s no wonder that special needs students struggle so much. They have the tricky challenges they face according to their diagnosis with the added problem of the difficult English language also.

The letters have I not used?

J, X, Z, Q
