Change spells trouble!!

15 Mar

Daily post: What are you more comfortable with — routine and planning, or laissez-faire spontaneity?

This is an easy one, for many special needs children, but particularly autistic children, spontaneity spells trouble.

If you don’t have a change system, you will have trouble.

If you don’t warn them that they have a teacher change, or a room change, you will have trouble.

There is a long list of things that can be caused, and avoided by minimising uncertainty.

We have a boy at the moment who is not very verbal, in a meaningful way. Change and uncertainty frighten him, and he has no way of communicating that, so he lashes out. Teachers need to be mindful because he can bite, hit, knock you over. Another boy screams if he is anxious. It sort of reminds me of the film Rainman. He rocks and covers his ears and just screams.

Its really difficult sometimes to understand the processes of the autistic mind. But, with a system in place to help predict and warn of change, anxiety will be reduced, and so will the danger, both to themselves, and to others.

For our class, it is as simple as a post it note. yellow means change, and the timetable is the perfect size, that we can just stick post it notes over the timetable.

There have been a great many crises diverted this way.

My autistic son, now at the age of 42, can manage with changes today, although it took a time. He has to get on with things in the “normal” adult world. I cannot always be next to him guiding his hand, but somehow he seems to get the idea now that things are not always the same. He is armed with a mobile telephone when he has a problem, and is perfectly capable of using it. Just a matter of routine I suppose.
